Judy Malan is an independent practitioner in the field of leadership development. Most of her work is with senior teams at the helm of large institutions and systems, supporting them as a facilitator and team coach to align their strategic priorities and improve the effectiveness of the way in which they work together, as well as how they engage their organisations. She also supports C-suite leaders as an executive coach, working with clients across multiple industries and geographies, globally.
One of her focus areas is enabling groups to collaborate effectively where conflicting worldviews co–exist, such as in multi-cultural settings, multi-sector partnerships, or when systems need to navigate moments of major transformation. Enabling groups to have generative dialogues in conditions of dissonance and uncertainty is another.
Strengthening her clients’ capacity to recognize, host and lead in complexity is at the heart of her work. When leaders deepen their awareness of and insight into themselves and their systemic context, they have the opportunity to consciously shift their own mindsets and be more deliberate about creating an enabling environment for others in the eco-system they lead. By cultivating our capacity as leaders to shift from reacting against the past (and repeating old, outdated patterns), to being fully present and attuned to the future as it emerges, we learn how to expand paradigms and transcend polarities.
Prior to starting her own practice in 2013, Judy spent 14 years with McKinsey & Company, where she was a partner of the Firm from 2004, based in the Johannesburg office. During this time her work focused on enabling large-scale performance transformation programs, with a focus on culture and leadership. She also had the opportunity to lead both the Organisation and Public Sector practices for McKinsey in the region.
Judy is a Newfield Network trained coach, accredited in Systemic Work with the Hellinger Institute, and works with a range of instruments including Spiral Dynamics, Barrett Values and The Leadership Circle. Over the past 20 years, she has worked and studied with teachers such as Gita Bellin, Bob Keegan, Otto Scharmer, Deepak Chopra, Thomas Huebl, Rudy Bauer, Judy Wilkins-Smith and Don Beck. She also trained in Somatic Coaching with Jen Cohen.
Judy lives in Johannesburg with her husband Chris and their children, Lila and Kosaan. She is passionate about the African continent, and about growing a new generation of leaders to effectively tackle wicked problems and enable Africa to thrive in our lifetime.
Judy holds a B.Comm (LLB) from the University of Stellenbosch, as well as a BCL (Masters of Law) from Oxford University (Balliol College) where she was a Balliol Scholar. She spent a year at the SA Constitutional Court as a research assistant to Justice Laurie Ackermann.
