    Leading Inclusively Leading Inclusively

Current world events show us clearly that understanding and engaging across our cultural and social identity differences is important and complex. As humans, we’re wired to label each other and construct reasons to elevate our group over other groups. We are seeing more and more the limitations of this wiring, especially when we commit microaggressions against individuals and groups and our unconscious biases get us in all kinds of trouble. Society and our organizations demand that we become more self-aware and inclusive. This demand challenges our identity, simple stories, and need for control. How can we meet this demand and learn to engage with others from different cultures and social identity? Sometimes when we try, we get it wrong and this unsettles us. How can we learn to bring our most expansive selves to leading inclusively? If we can’t, what are the costs to not only our development, but to our commitment to a better world?

With Carolyn Coughlin and Patrice Laslett of Cultivating Leadership, and Marie Pace at The Barcelona International Peace Center

This workshop is for leaders and leadership coaches who are looking to become better able to thrive in the complexities currently challenging organisations and our world. Whether you are familiar with the ideas of complexity or just becoming acquainted, we will invite you to bring a personal challenge that you can work on while learning handy tools to help you explore the problem. By exploring the contexts in which we find ourselves, how we show up in them and act differently in them, we can make dramatic progress on challenges that we have been battling for some time.

Note: This offering of the workshop is intended primarily for people in the peace building field and we will be using that backdrop during the workshop – the principles however will apply in any complex scenario.

Expanding Client Horizons Openly Expanding Client Horizons Openly

This workshop moves from the practice of tentatively exploring your clients’ developmental sensemaking to actually having explicit conversations with your clients about their Growth Edge and whether and how to grow into a new developmental place. We also explore the practice of uncovering “tethers”—those assumptions, beliefs, or practices that hold back our sensemaking (and thus our actions) from a new set of possibilities. You’ll practice all of the components of the Growth Edge Coaching Interview process: conducting a full Growth Edge Interview, creating a feedback report, and talking with another person about what you make of his developmental trajectory. And because you’ll have a turn being both client and coach in this practice, you’ll get the benefits of experiencing some Growth Edge coaching of your own and understanding from the client’s perspective the opening this creates in your own sensemaking.

Psychologically Spacious Coaching Psychologically Spacious Coaching

In this workshop, we create and practice new ways of using developmental ideas throughout a coaching engagement. This allows you to ask different questions and support your clients in new ways without actually conducting a complete Growth Edge Interview or preparing a formal report. We explore ways you can weave Growth Edge ideas throughout your conversations with clients to find the subject/object distinctions in the way clients experience particular dilemmas. Then we use that new information to help expand the solution space for our clients. As with all of our workshops, we practice as we learn, exploring our own sensemaking as we understand the sensemaking of others. This module also includes discussion and practice of specific coaching approaches that might be helpful with clients who seem to be in particular developmental transitions.
